Dream of the Week: Dragon Portal (And Other Things...)

Quick Setup:
This dream is quite long, so I’m removing some early portions for the sake of brevity.

Lucid, I’m at the top of a building overlooking a large city at night. I decide to fly out over the city, eventually flying into a basketball court with Tim Robinson and several Looney Toons cartoon characters, including Bugs Bunny. I’m curious about the situation, unsure what to make of it. Tim shows them how to fly, and they each begin to lift up and out of the gymnasium. I quickly follow them, flying up to the rafters and easily passing through the roof of the building.

Once outside, we’re all flying up toward the cosmos. They disappear behind me as I soar upward at faster speeds. In the distance, I see big orange stars and, I “let go” of my body. I’m now float-flying upward toward the stars horizontally. Strange pixelated objects begin softly floating near me. I pluck them from the sky and put them in my mouth as if to eat them. Nothing happens as I do this, but I’m incredibly delighted to chomp on them like a video game.

As I continue to rise upward toward the cosmos, I recall my intent and ask the dream to show me my highest self. When the words come out of my mouth, I begin to struggle with speaking toward the end of the phrase. Losing my voice often happens for me, but each time it feels jarring and confusing. Nonetheless, the now empty black sky begins to swirl in barely perceptible ways before an enormous green dragon appears. The dragon flies in tight circles around a bright orange fire orb that seems like a portal.

Before long, I am pulled into the orb, and the scene immediately shifts to a small room that seems like it’s inside a tree. Everything in the room is small and trinket-like, and I’m surprised by the sudden shift in vibe. I sit on a tiny armchair, and a small creature appears before me. I seem to ask it for my “soul purpose,” but the words don’t come out quite right; I’m unable to articulate what I mean. The creature disappears, and I’m feeling a bit nervous about what will happen next. Still lucid, I try to let go of the anxiety by getting up and dancing. Several objects and a small tree in the corner begin to dance with me, and I feel more confident again. With this new feeling, I jump up and “dive” into the ground with the intent of traveling somewhere new. I seem to wake up.

It’s a false awakening.

No longer lucid, I sit up in an unfamiliar bedroom with two men sitting by my side. They’re excited that I’m finally awake and eagerly hand me a stack of papers. Some of the papers are my dream keywords, but most of them are letters from fans. Confused, I ask them about the fan mail, and they tell me that the whole world has been watching my “dream movies.” I don’t quite understand what they mean, and they tell me that already existing television and movie scripts are here for me to read. I’m instantly disappointed; I thought they meant that many movies and television shows were being made from my dreams and people were watching them live.

I wake up.

Note: Sometimes your lucid dreams can behave in the most unexpected ways! Go with the flow and let things happen.

Strawberry House on Pool Boulevard

Dream of the Week: Strawberry House on Pool Boulevard

I’m outside in the middle of a random field, and I notice that things seem just a little bit strange. This odd confusion sparks lucidity, and I realize that I’m dreaming. Excited to be lucid again tonight, I decide that I want to turn myself into a tree. I wish to change from me to tree, but it doesn’t work. I fly in the air and talk about becoming a tree in a sing-song way, intent on making it happen.

It occurs to me that I might be going about it all wrong and that it’s just a quick switch. I should experience the process where parts of me transition first, and I will more slowly and more intentionally. I imagine branches flowing from my fingers, and they begin to grow. My arms and hands and body all transform to small branches and roots before I am fully shifted into a tree. I’m delighted!

Still floating in the air, I fly up as fast as I can, slowly shifting back into human form. I break through a kind barrier and enter a whimsical, colorful wonderland similar to something like Whoville. The homes are closely packed together along a mountainside with amazing colors and perfect little lawns. Each home has a large beautiful blue swimming pool taking up most of the yard. They are all situated along a swimming pool boulevard that connects the town.

People are “commuting” down the main thoroughfare by lying on their backs in swimsuits, letting the current take them down the mountain. I fly down to “my” home, a giant luxurious strawberry with a pool inside and outside. I swim in and out of the pool, splashing in the water and feeling the utmost joy.

I settle on the edge of the indoor pool, looking out onto this amazing town, wishing I could come back here often. I consider the pool, the creativity, the color, and have nothing but fondness and love for this little spot I’ve created. This is what the wealth and abundance has created for me, and I couldn’t be happier. I understand that this is the best place for me, and I’m overjoyed.

I continue to look around and take in the scene, noticing a white dome at the very top of the city. I think that must be where the richest of the rich live or maybe even the overseers of this town. Out of curiosity, I want to see what I might discover up there, so I decide to fly up and check it out. I pause for a moment, thanking myself for this little spot and hoping I’ll get to come back.

The dream fades. 🍓

ProTip: It’s possible to “re-enter” a dream experience through quiet and focused visualization exercises while awake. Imagine you are back there and let new experiences unfold.

Near Death by Orca

image.jpg

Dream of the Week: Near Death by Orca

I’m with a group of close friends in an observation cage suspended very high over a small town near the ocean. One friend arrives late, jumping into the cage from an unknown location. She doesn’t quite make it in the cage at first, gripping the side of it while throwing her pink handbag to another friend. After a short bit of hanging on the edge, the late friend manages to climb inside, and everyone settles down.

The cage swiftly flies over the town, touring the area before making a stop over the ocean. We are delighted to observe a large pod of orca feeding in the sea below. Suddenly, the cage breaks, and we all plummet into the water, splashing hard and fast. I lose track of everyone else as I try to find my way to the surface. The orcas are restless and aggressive, and I’m panicked to see one coming right for me. I am instantly killed when it bites down.

I “wake” up on the floor inside a small, dark room in front of an elevator. I’m aware that I have died. An unknown man and woman are there too. The woman is supportive and helpful, calming me down and helping me get up from the floor. She says nothing, but her presence is comforting. The man is standing inside a service window next to the elevator. I understand that he is the operator, and he is very stoic and emotionless. Ten bright lights appear in the air in front of him.

“You have ten seconds to decide if you want to stay here or go back there,” he says as the lights blink off with every passing second.

I don’t quite know what to do, so I close my eyes and let my instincts speak. “Go back,” I say without thought, and three seconds left.

The elevator door opens. The woman hands me two gray stones, the size of my palms. She sends me in alone. As the doors close, the stones begin to emit tiny white lights around them as if fireflies were circling each stone.

The elevator begins to descend, with the doors slightly open. I can still see the man and woman in the room. The rocks begin to float above my hands as though activating something. I feel incredible joy and love and call out to the people how much I love them. The woman happily waves down to me, and the doors close fully. I continue to ride the elevator down until the environment fades to black.

I “wake” again under the water with the orca still circling above, just as before.

With a renewed sense of purpose, energy, and courage, I swim as fast as I can to the surface, breaking the water with pure joy. I call for the orcas to follow me so I can get them away from my friends. With impossible speed, I lure them to chase me but manage to keep them at bay. Eventually, they give up, and I swim back toward one of them, completely unafraid. With reckless abandon and utter confidence, I leap onto the back of an orca and ride it toward land.

I wake up. 🐋

Note: Dreams of dying can be surprisingly cathartic, energizing, and even comforting. Lean into your death dreams with curiosity over fear.

Pool Dance Party

Dream of the Week: Pool Dance Party

I’m swimming in a massive outdoor pool in the middle of a lush, tree-filled public park. Lots of other swimmers are enjoying the beauty of the water amongst the bountiful plant life. Joyfully leaping in and out of the pool, and producing perfectly crisp splashes, I suddenly realize I’m dreaming!

Now lucid, I clearly and eagerly recall my goal of getting everyone in a dream to dance with me. ⚡️

Standing at the edge of the water, I gleefully shake and dance around, with total abandonment of inhibition. I wave my hands, jump about sprightly, and joyfully groove to an imagined beat, hoping the dream figures in the pool will join me. My dancing continues for a short while before they eventually jump in and mimic my motions. When I wave my arms, they follow, all with exuberant smiles, effervescent freedom, and energized spirits. I feel like I’m revitalizing my whole self by getting these figures to move with me

I then notice that all the dream figures here are women, and relish in the feminine spirit. I take off my swimsuit, and they all follow. We’re overflowing with carefree joy, completely secure in ourselves, and our uninhibited bliss. It’s incredible! I dive into the pool and feel the water’s cool sensation as I soar swiftly beneath the surface.

I wake up.

Note: The energy of dancing in this dream made such a positive impact on my mood the following day. Give it a try!

Dream of the Week: The Universe Inside

More from the archives this week!

June 20, 2020
Dream #2127
The Universe Inside

I’ve entered the dream directly from being awake, lucid at the start. I had been thinking intently about Out of Body Experiences before dream initiation. I’m lying in bed, drifting between wakefulness and sleep. I sense myself drifting away from my physical body, and feel an unusual tingling sensation through my dream body. It feels warm and effervescent as if my whole being is sparkling.

There are no visualizations, just darkness. Ever so slowly, I feel the sensation of rising upward, in a horizontal position, as if laying down facing up. My eyes begin to adjust, and I’m amazed to understand that I’m actually inside a “universe” within of my body. It’s filled with endless bright stars, purple galaxies, and all the characteristics of the cosmos as we know it. I seem to be a tiny visitor inside here.

My “being” begins to pulse and radiate as I get closer to a starry-silhouetted version of my spine. I’m now facing forward, floating in this universe inside my body. The tingling sensation increases, washing over my being with more intensity and frequency. I’m overwhelmed by joy, awe, and curiosity. I can’t believe that this is here within me.

I wake up.

Note: Out of body experience dreams often feel other-worldy or cosmic, but fleeting. Breathe deeply and maintain focus to hold on to them longer.

Fight with the Dream Club

Dream of the Week: Fight with the Dream Club

I’m a little inconsistent during the pandemic - even though we’ve been rolling this way for months. I’m just going to own it! Lots of stress all through August, the pressure of the upcoming election, continued civil unrest, and a brutal heatwave, have lead to a particularly lacking week. I’ll dip into recent dreams, and post a dream from the not-too-distant past of August 28, 2020. Basically yesterday.

August 28, 2020
Dream #2,319
Fight with the Dream Club

I’m at a medical clinic of some kind that feels homey and inviting with low, warm lighting. I approach the front desk, and a friend greets me with a friendly smile and a hearty laugh. She tells her colleagues that we know each other, and we talk about dreams. She tells me that she thinks that she is dreaming this whole thing right now. I tell her that I think I am dreaming this whole thing right now! We agree that we are probably both asleep at home right now, dreaming the same thing and at the same time. The conversation makes me realize that I am in fact dreaming. ✨

Now lucid, I continue chatting with my friend. She informs me that there is a “Dream Club” in the cafeteria, and I should talk to them about this dream world we’re both in. I think it’s a great idea, and I head over to them. I approach the Dream Group and stand by their table, immediately launching into the story of me and my friend. A young, goth-looking woman is the first one to get mad at me.

“It is impossible to share dreams with someone. What you’re describing can’t exist,” she barks at me. “And besides, this is not a dream.”

I’m genuinely surprised by her response.

“I know it’s not been proven, but maybe it’s possible? I’m open to wild ideas since we still know so little about dreams. Don’t you guys talk about that in the group?”

“No, it’s not real.”

I’m confused by her resistance and look to see how the others are responding to this exchange. Everyone else looks angry with me too. I’m baffled.

“But this is a dream, look I’ll show you.”

I perform a few reality checks in front of them, but I know they will fail. And they do. I’m now frustrated because I’m absolutely certain I am dreaming. I’m confused by the resistance from a group of dreamers. I pick up a glass and throw it at the window. It bounces off the glass and floats back to me.

“See, look! It has to be a dream,” I shout at them.

They remain unconvinced, and think I’m way out of line, behaving like a maniac.

I throw several more glasses to prove that it’s a dream for them. They all float back to me.

“Can’t you see?”

I’m distracted by a commotion behind me and turn to see what is going on. Everything seems normal, so I turn back to the Dream Group. I’m shocked to see that there is now broken glass all over the floor as if the glasses were never floating back to me. Did I make all of that up? Is this actually a dream?

They all look up at me as if I’ve lost my mind, angry and afraid that I’ll throw more glasses.

The dream fades.

ProTip: Always question your reality, awake and asleep. Maybe even your lucid dream isn’t what you think it is?

She Knows & She’s Real

Dream of the Week: She Knows & She’s Real

It was a big dreaming week for me, perhaps one of the highest volume of dreams in a single week I have ever had! (Note to self, figure out a way to automate this metric in my dream data spreadsheet). I like to make sure that I am on top of writing them down the same day, but sometimes it carries over to the next day or two. With so many dreams this week, I am just a wee bit behind, so I thought I’d dig into the archives and pull out a memorable from the past.

Here we go!

November 17, 2018
Dream #427
She Knows & She’s Real

I’m at an afternoon cocktail party in a small, charming venue where busy guests are socializing happily and drinking their fancy drinks. I wander aimlessly, looking for something to do, bored by the banality of it all. It has all the markings of a wedding where I only know the bride. I decide to get a cocktail and approach the bar. On the way, something sparks my awareness, and I become lucid. ⚡️

I notice a little girl, about 8 years old, standing by her parents and looking up at me curiously. She smiles.

“Hello,” she says.

“Hi!” I say back, charmed by her cute friendliness, interested in where this conversation might lead.

Her grin grows wider. “I know this is a dream.”

Holy shit, I think. Intrigued, I ask her what she means.

“I know that you are dreaming.”

I respond, “So you know that you’re not real?”

“Oh no, I am very real. I am real in real life, just not in here.”

😱

I wake up.

Note: I’m always so amazed when “lucid” dream figures say things like this to me! I always wake up with a sense of astonishment.

Dream of the Week: Dream Manipulation

Quick Setup:
Last week was difficult and stressful! And as expected, dream recall and lucidity dwindled. Such is the ebb and flow of life. This week, I am digging into the archives, as there are always plenty of experiences from the past! Let's go!

September 2, 2018
Dream #0228
Dream Manipulation

Lucid at the start, I’m driving fast along a city highway with my partner in the passenger seat. We are speeding by, looking at the other cars when I think I want to fly. Suddenly, we are flying over the highway in a helicopter. I look down below and see another helicopter parked on the ground. Seeing it parked makes me think that I may not be in a helicopter after all. With this thought, I’m now flying freely through the sky with no vehicle.

He has vanished, and I fly quickly beyond the city limits to a neighborhood in the distance. I land on a pristine white sidewalk with many quaint suburban houses neatly in a row. It’s a bright and beautiful summer afternoon. I pause for a moment and consider what to do with my lucidity.

I look up to the blue sky and notice large, fluffy white clouds and think to change their color. Before I do that, however, I think I ought to try something smaller first. I look back to the houses and notice one lawn nearby that is covered in white rocks. I kneel down and pick one up, holding it in the palm of my hand. I close my grip around it and think it will be purple when I open my hand. When I do, it’s purple! I’m overjoyed. Next, I pick up a gray and white rock and repeat the process, willing it to be orange. I open my palm, and it’s indeed orange.

Thrilled by my skills, I try to multiply some flowers on the lawn. I slowly lift my finger up from the ground, imagining that new plants are sprouting from the tip. It works, and I am absolutely dazzled! I repeat this process, creating small patches of flowers and plants on the lawn, feeling totally amazed that it’s working. While in the middle of multiplying flowers, I see a man with a fish as a head walk by. I continue with my dream plants, absolutely sure I will not remember the fish head man.

I wake up.

ProTip: Take a break from your practice when you are stressed or have other priorities. Your dreams will always be there when you’re ready.

Flying in the Green & Red Trees

Dream of the Week: Flying in the Green & Red Trees

It’s an overcast day, and I’m in a strange forest watching Chris Pratt set up a “flying experiment” in a tall tower among the trees. As he prepares, he shouts down to me that he will be able to fly once he jumps out of the tower, and it will win him the grand prize. I’m very nervous for him because I know that he can’t actually fly and I’m worried that the zip line he created will be too long and he’ll hit the ground. I insist that he think it over, but he is confident.

With some growing awareness, I look around and notice that the trees are strange colors. The leaves of some trees are a bright but muted orange, red hue. Some of the other trees are a mint green color that’s unusual for such foliage. I smile and laugh knowingly, this is a dream! ✨

Now lucid, I looked back up to Chris, who is preparing to jump. I run closer to him and excitedly shout, “Chris! You can fly, this is a dream, go for it!” He leaps out of the tower and flies forward, falling toward the ground. I fly up to join him, and he is shocked. We both fly through the trees together, and I explain we can do anything we want here. He checks back for the harness and zipline and realizes that we are genuinely flying in this forest. He’s nervous but excited as I guide him through the trees. We fly around in utter bliss.

I wake up.

ProTip: Flying is an amazing thing to practice in lucid dreams. It’s exhilirating every time! But be careful, there’s so many other things to explore.

Dream House Materials

Dream of the Week: Dream House Materials

Quick Setup:
I’m obsessed with the idea of building a modern, glass home that focuses on a stunning pool and the interplay of water and materials as a primary focal point of the property. I’ll get there someday! I loved that this dream showed up for me.

I’m walking around an office space that is split up by teams. It’s early in the afternoon, and I notice that the lights are off to let the natural light fill the room. I wander around the office aimlessly before making my way back to my desk.

I pass by a manager with whom I am somewhat acquainted. She is looking over a special booklet of materials and renderings of the house she is building with her architect. I ask her about the booklet, and she eagerly shows me the most recent renders she’s been given. We look at beautiful, light beige material samples that will be used as decorative paneling outside the home. She explains that the material is made of recycled flooring, processed down and recreated into thin, textured panels that are also extremely energy efficient. I’m incredibly impressed.

She continues to flip through the booklet, highlighting her favorite renders focused on the interplay of water, light, and interiors with incredible pool placement. I’m blown away and tell her that I’ve never met anyone else who has been as focused on pools and water in the same way that I am.

She shows me two of her absolute favorite drawings. One of a rounded bedroom, framed by glass with a pool curved against the outside glass. The second, a square indoor/outdoor pool with a tree enclosed in glass natural light atrium in the center. I absolutely love the things that she is exploring, and I am so excited to see what she ends up doing. I wake up.

ProTip: Non-lucid dreams can be just as wonderful and creative as lucid dreams. Focus on both types as you explore the depth of your mind.

Exploring My Apartment

dream-0871.jpg

Dream of the Week: Exploring My Apartment

I’ve been on a hiatus from posting my Dream of the Week for a bit, as I’ve been adjusting and readjusting to this new, “temporary normal,” as I like to call it. Like everyone, I’ve been experiencing the ups and downs of shelter-in-place, civic unrest, and the political climate of the day. I’m finally (sort of) getting into a more typical groove, working toward posting on a weekly cadence here again. As always, lots of tips and tricks are on
Instagram.

Wishing you all good health and safety during this wild time.

//

I suddenly feel myself sitting up in bed, having successfully transitioned into a realistic dream state and already lucid. ⚡️

It takes some effort to move, so I try to calm my excitement to remain in the dream. It’s morning, and I’m in my bed, but the scene is blurry and still forming. I’m thrilled by the idea of exploring this place, I can see that it looks like the real thing. I slowly get out of bed, as the world begins to stabilize.

Filled with a surge of curiosity, I quickly dash into the bathroom, the first room next to the bedroom. To my surprise and delight, it’s incredibly realistic, a faithful remake of the real thing. I see my regular reflection in the medicine cabinet above the sink. I open and close it quickly, surprised to see that my reflection is now completely gone from the mirror. Eager to continue my exploration, I walk down the long hallway of my apartment, reaching my office at the end of the hall. The door is closed, which is unusual. I pause with anticipation for a moment, wondering what I might find when I open the door.

A smile flashes across my face as I enter the room, seeing that it looks exactly the same as the waking version. The office glows with soft morning light, highlighting the numerous plants around the room and the artwork on the wall. The exactness of it all makes me so happy. The Google Home Mini on my desk turns on, saying something that I can’t remember. It didn’t seem particularly significant, and I concluded that I’d likely forget anyway.

I think about how much I love looking up in lucid dreams, and lift my head up, astonished by what I see. My office ceiling now resembles an expansive glass atrium where a giant gray face is looking down on me, watching me from above. The face is so massive that only one of its eyes is visible to me. My jaw drops with wonder, deeply curious about who is watching me.

I wake up.

ProTip: Focus on writing just the keywords throughout the night. You can write the whole dream later in the day.

Forest Neighborhood

Dream of the Week: Forest Neighborhood

I have been “away” from posting my usual Dream of the Week since I returned from Antarctica - the very beginning of North America’s coronavirus toll. Like many of you, I have also been trying to make sense of this temporary normal and haven’t quite found a regular groove. But that's ok! I forgive myself.

As the weeks go on, I find comfort in getting into those habits! And so here we go again. Dream of the Week back on track! I'm dreaming more than ever (I'm sure many of you are well), so there's lots of dreams to choose from - not to mention many many many more from the past.

So, let's do this!

April 19, 2020
Dream #1,950
Glass House in the Forest

I’m in a beautiful glass house in the middle of a forest that I absolutely love. It’s not my house; I seem to be house-sitting for the owners who are out of town. The furniture and decor have a very antique vibe to it that is not my current taste, but I'm into the eclectic nature of it all.

I tend to the house, walking to each room, and making sure everything is in order. I open cabinets and adjust furniture throughout thinking about how I'd really love to own this house. I head down a long, beautiful corridor with plants and windows that reminds me of a nature conservatory. I then walk out the door into the forest "neighborhood."

There are several different kinds of buildings hidden amongst the trees in this secret, protected place. I go to a central building that serves as a large shopping center with a food court and other retail stores. It has a bustling train station feel to it, with a glass roof and the forest above.

Once inside, I slide across the marble floors with my socks, delightfully gaining momentum and eventually crash-stopping at a cafe on the other side of the main hall. It’s such fun! I think I should do that kind of thing more often back home.

The scene shifts, and I'm back outside the forest neighborhood walking through a small pathway behind the central building. I’m trying to walk back to the original house, but I am having trouble finding my way. I'm lost, but I think to myself that it's impossible to get lost here - everything is so close!

It occurs to me that I might be dreaming, and I let out a giggle and an audible, "Of course, I'm dreaming!" ⚡️

Now lucid, I simply take in my surroundings and think about what I want to do. I remember the small pleasures in changing objects, so I pick up some small gray stones by feet on the path. I plan to throw the stones and intend for them to turn into strawberries when they hit the ground. I close my eyes and throw the stones, but most of them hit the ground and remain stones.

I sprint over to the pile and can see that some of them, in fact, have turned to strawberries! The sight of these red berries genuinely overjoys me! I take a bite of them, and they are the best tasting strawberries I've ever had! I eat the rest of them with overwhelming glee. I'm so so happy. 🍓

I look up and notice a lamp post in front of me. There’s a little compartment at the bottom of the post meant for electrical wires. I think to myself that I want a cupcake to appear in the compartment, so I close my eyes and visualize a cupcake. When I open my eyes, a tiny chocolate cupcake appears in there! I am again overjoyed and eat the delicious chocolate sweet treat. I can’t believe how real it seems and how amazing it tastes! What joy! 🧁

After eating the strawberries and cupcakes, I follow the path up to a road and wake up.

ProTip: Changing objects in a dream is a great way to practice your lucid dreaming skills! Even better if you can change objects into delicious treats!

Higher Self Simulation

Dream of the Week: Higher Self Simulation

Stress is no joke! I had a particularly challenging week at work which absolutely effected my sleep and dreams. This week marked the lowest volume of dreams recalled and a rare no lucid dream week due to lots of restless nights before deadlines and presentations.

The critical importance of great sleep really came to the forefront for me, especially when I didn't get it. It's not always possible to get quality sleep for many reasons, but whenever and wherever possible, it's so important to prioritize. I deeply felt that lesson this week.

So! Let's go into the archives again this week to share a great dream of a more restful time.

Dream #0666
Higher Self Simulation

⚡️Already lucid, I find myself in a strange room that resembles a classroom, a science lab, and a closet with a yellow/green checkered vinyl floor. The dream is hazy, so I rub my hands together to stabilize the scene which works well. I easily recall my intention and goals that I set for the night and I shout out into the air, "Show me my higher self!"

A cyan-colored wall appears that is textured like a slimy membrane with a darker blue digital pattern all over it. The membrane wall is slightly pulsing and subtly moving as if alive. Yes!!! I'm elated. I instinctively know that I must pass through the membrane and I easily walk through it.

Inside, the environment looks like a computer-generated simulation. It's totally black with long rows of a digital mesh or tiny grid layers illuminated in red and some blue light giving a Tron-like vibe.

I'm so curious as to what this place is and why this would represent my higher self. As this thought crosses my mind, a blue digital simulated figure appears in the distance. I call out to it without words and start running toward it hoping to ask it questions. The figure appears to see me coming toward it and runs away, disappearing deep between the mesh layers.

For a moment longer, I stand there in the black, red, and blue digital world feeling a bit unsatisfied but intensely curious and fascinated by what went down. The dream continues uneventfully from there and I wake up with a sense of awesome bewilderment.

ProTip: Stress is so hard on the body, mind, and soul. Be kind to yourself during periods of stress and priortize sleep as much as you are able.

Dream of the Week: Cosmic City

I took a little dreaming break last week, with very few intentions and limited active practice. Every now and then I like to close up shop and let some dreams go. Aside from the general benefits of not trying to “achieve” anything, I re-learned an important, simple lesson.

Without practice and intention, there are fewer dreams and less awareness. It’s so important to have balance, so taking a step back during a stressful, emotional week was just what I needed. No judgment, just balance. In honor of this week’s “letting go”, I’m highlighting an experience from last year as this week’s dream.

January 19, 2019
Dream #0663
Cosmic City

II'm lying in bed in meditation counting my breaths and observing the hypnogogic imagery swirling behind my eyelids. Suddenly, dark purple colors explode in my vision, rapidly morphing and changing shape. Moments later, I am pulled into a fully realized dream bedroom unlike my own, floating up from the bed and then standing beside it, fully lucid.⚡️

It's the middle of the night and everything shrouded in darkness, but my eyes have adjusted to the lack of light. I look at my hand to double-check that I'm dreaming and confirm the state with a strange wiggle of my abnormally long and wavy fingers.

I sense a lack of stability, so I rub my hands together which does seem to help provide clarity and strength. I also ask out loud for the dream to stabilize, with no notable difference. As a final push, I ask for the dream to turn on the lights, but nothing happens. I notice a tiny bit of light appearing just below my vision (where the edge of my sleep mask would be) and I wonder if the mask is slipping off my face while I sleep in my actual bed.

It's time to take note of this dream world and what's here to explore. The place is a large, artist-loft style bedroom with tall ceilings and oversized windows. The curtains are drawn closed. I'm curious about where I am and head to the windows to find out.

With no expectations or intentions, I rush to the windows and tear open the curtains revealing a majestic city skyline, unlike anything I've ever seen before. The room is high up, offering a view of rooftops and the entire city twinkling at night as far as the eye can see. The most extraordinary thing about this particular nightscape is the unbelievably dense cosmic sky so clearly visible even against the city lights.

The sky is overwhelmingly full of big pulsing stars, and whispy, colorful nebula all moving in beautiful, flowing orbits. It's as if this city is nestled on a planet that's much closer to or much denser in cosmic stuff. One star shines brighter than all the rest with a white glow so bright, I can barely look at it. It's quite distant and not like the light of the sun, but feels special. I'm stuck there, happily transfixed by the mesmerizing scene before me, getting lost in the details of the sky.

A chubby little chipmunk sitting on the window snaps me out of my awestruck stare and I yell at him for interrupting this beautiful moment. He tells me to watch my tone and I wake up.

ProTip: Take a break every now and then. A key ingredient to lasting consistency is balance. Let some dreams go.

Meeting the Dream Maker

Dream of the Week: Meeting the Dream Maker

I'm walking along a city street at night with no one else around. It's eerie how quiet it is, but I keep moving with my head down. I stop at a corner and it's raining. It's *only* raining right here on this small sliver of the sidewalk. How unusual it is for the rain to be so narrowly focused? I ask myself, "Is this a dream?" Whoa, it is! ⚡️

Now lucid, I check my reality by attempting to put my hand through the abandoned store window next to me. The glass breaks and I can feel the cold, solid pieces of glass around my hand, but there's no pain. Now certain that I'm dreaming, I walk through the store wall, but I break it and everything inside. Whoops. I go back outside and a car is parked directly outside. The windows are up, but I can see someone sitting in the back seat. I think to stick my head through the window to talk to the person, but with my current track record, I go with my hand instead. I push my hand toward the glass and THUD... I hit my hand against the surface. It doesn't break and it doesn't pass through. What the heck?

The window rolls down and a woman in her twenties is there. Her gaze remains forward and she looks very annoyed. A friendlier man in the front seat (who I understand to be her brother) turns to the back and happily waves to me forward implying that I should go to the front passenger window to talk to him. I go to his window and he hands me a hand-written note that says, "Go visit the park, you're already there." I try a re-reading test and am surprised that the words on the note stay the same. I'm very excited to follow his direction. I wave goodbye and walk ahead repeating, "Go visit the park, you're already there" to myself over and over so that I remember it when I wake up.

Within moments, I reach the park and realize why he wanted me to come here. It's absolutely beautiful! It's night time, but somehow everything has a shining glow. The park is bursting with perfectly trimmed hedges, colorful flower bushes, magical trees with unusual green leaves and twinkling lights, and teeny blue butterflies hovering among strange orange fruits resembling the kumquat. I can't get over how unbelievably whimsical this place is and I break into song, randomly signing things that I see.

I fly up above the corner of the park, getting a birds-eye view, considering what to explore first. Surprisingly, I can't seem to fly forward. I make a few attempts to move ahead, unintentionally pushing myself upside down! I roll with it, hovering down beneath a tree examining the teeny butterflies in great detail. In the distance, I see a small apple tree within another tree and am utterly delighted!

Forgetting that I'm upside down, I fly toward it but fall to the ground. When I get back up, it's now daytime and I'm on a cement bridge in the center of the park looking down over a grassy knoll below. Still fully lucid, I decide it's time to talk to the dream itself. With that in mind, I shout up to the sky, "I wish to speak with the Dream Maker!" Nothing happens. I repeat this three more times, and each time, nothing happens.

I'm left disappointed and confused. Suddenly, an enormous figure enters the scene, as tall as the sky itself. He resembles a young version of Genghis Khan and looks down on my tiny self with a look of mild frustration as if he has been disrupted. (I'm probably the size of his hand). I look up at him in awe and he stands still for a moment of judgment.

He shrinks down to normal human size, with the same stern look on his face. I'm in such a shock, that I don't know what to say. I wish I had been more prepared with a question! So, I go in for a hug. He backs away and without words, communicates that an embrace is not an appropriate right now. He seems to communicate that I must not rush it and the dream becomes wildly unstable before it fades completely to black.

But, I don't wake up. I come back to the scene again and he is still looking over me. He continues to communicate that he is in control here and that I need to be slow. I dip in and out a few more times before waking up completely, surprised and unsure of what to make of it all. 😱

ProTip: Go into each night with an intention or question that you’d like to request of your dream. Have a few at the ready!
